Conferences

Hello Families,

Your child is welcome to attend his/her conference. I would love to have the children there but will leave the choice to you. Please contact me if you need a reminder of your conference day and/or time.

I will try my best to post a weekly update, but with the snow day and conferences this week, I may not be able to get to it until Friday.  If that is the case I will update you on both weeks at that time.

I'm  looking forward to meeting with you this week.

In honor of I Love to Read month we have a second mystery reader coming on Tuesday! Here are the clues from this mysterious person:

Weekly Update

Hello Families,

Happy Valentine’s Day! We have had an exciting week of school! We kicked off Winter Fest and celebrated the 100^th day of school and Valentine’s Day. Next week will be filled with fun too. Winter Fest is on Tuesday and our Olympic Passport tour is on Thursday.

Math

We are counting groups of tens. If I say I have 5 groups of 10 pencils, your child should be able to say 50 pencils without counting by tens. They are multiplying and they don’t even know it! J We also found patterns on a hundred chart. We are skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. This is a great activity in the car. It’s good to start and stop in the middle too, instead of always starting at zero.

Reading Workshop

We are still working on asking questions before, during, and after reading with fiction and non-fiction text. This week we wrote questions independently about a city made of ice. We also read a fun story about the 100^th day of school and a cute Valentine story called Slugs in Love.

Writer’s Workshop

We are working on independent personal narratives. Each child will need to write three chronological events and a conclusion sentence about something they will always remember. These will be shared at conferences. First grade writing expectations at this time of the year are:

Proper spacing between letters, words, and sentences

Capital letters at the beginning of sentences

Capitals letters for proper nouns

End marks

Sight words spelled correctly

One syllable short vowel words spelled correctly

Words with beginning and/or ending blends and short vowels spelled correctly

Open vowel words spelled correctly

CVCe words spelled correctly. (cake, bake, snake, like, strike)

These skills are done in isolation beautifully! J Now we need to get it to transfer over to their writing.

 

This Week I Really Learned!

Thank you for writing to your child each week. We were not able to write out letters this week with all of the Valentine’s festivities. Feel free to have your child write a letter to you at home and/or write to your child anyway. J

Word Workshop

We learned the rule for when to use ck at the end of a word. Use ck at the end of a one syllable short vowel word. (tick, thick, track, lick, deck, duck)

Grammar

We practiced using have and has correctly.

The 100th Day of School

We've had a fabulous day of fun activities for the 100th Day of School!

 

We made Fruit Loop necklaces out of 100 Fruit Loops!

 

 

We dressed like we're 100 years old!

 

We counted our 100 objects from home by 25's, 20's and 10's

and then glued them into a picture or design.
